Globally increasing traffic volumes, heavy vehicles in particular, led to the development of specialised asphalt mixes that perform well without premature rutting or cracking under extreme loading.

GB5 High Modulus Asphalt System is a high-performance asphalt mix paved in a conventional manner. It consists of graded crushed aggregate, Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) modified bitumen, filler and reclaimed asphalt (RA) up to 25%. It is applied as a base or surface pavement layer.

GB5 was developed by French company Eiffage Travaux Publics, from whom AECI Much Asphalt acquired the rights to manufacture the product. AECI Much Asphalt has undertaken various successful GB5 trials on high traffic routes and has been awarded an Agrément Certificate for the product.

Asphalt pavement is 100% recyclable and AECI Much Asphalt has the capability to include between 10% and more than 50% recycled asphalt in new asphalt mixes.

A multistage bitumen converter acquired by AECI Much Asphalt subsidiary AECI SprayPave brings unique technology to Africa that changes bituminous products from one grade to another. This enables AECI SprayPave to enhance the penetration grades of bitumen required to produce asphalt.

The 20 tonne per hour converter was acquired from Tech nix Industries in New Zealand, a global leader in bitumen technologies. AECI Spray Pave is a manufacturer of bitumen, modified binders and emulsions.
